Character Background
• History: Kuroshitsuji | Sebastian
• Core Relationships:
Ciel: His current master, his current focal point in life, his soon-to-be very delicious dinner. If we're being real, Sebastian's relationship to Ciel is the only one that truly matters, since it's... the whole reason for Sebastian to be, well, Sebastian. His current master requires him to be in "a form befitting an earl". Thus, he is currently The Perfect Butler, and 95% of what he shows the world is fake fakity fake. Has being in his master's service for all this time influenced Sebastian in any core way, one that he won't discard the moment their Contract is over? Honestly: probably not. Sebastian's an ancient Eldritch abomination; a measly three years spent together with a mere human isn't likely to matter in the long run.
And from here on, we move on to what's less Core Relationships and more "relationships".
The Other Phantomhive Servants: Bless the other servants; they're all under the delusion that they have some shounen manga Power of Friendship thing going on, and that Sebastian and their master are part of that. And, sure, while they are all each others' Found Family, from Sebastian and Ciel's perspective it's alliance born out of strategy and power in numbers, not sentiment. When it comes to their common goal of Killing Enemies, Sebastian considers the servants his colleagues, regardless of their being only human. In every other aspect, they are beneath him; as their superior he has every right to berate and verbally abuse them when they've deserved it. While Sebastian has made an immense impact on their lives - being instrumental in providing a home, a purpose, friends, education - that impact isn't reciprocal: again, once this current Contract is over, Sebastian likely won't spare these people a second thought.
Agni: Fellow butler and Sebastian's One and Only Friend™. Well, at least Agni considers them friends. Sebastian... seems surprised but not displeased to be considered as such, but admittedly he never outright returns the sentiment. It's clear that Sebastian respects Agni as a colleague; respects his strength and skill as a butler - despite Agni being a pure-hearted, kind, deeply religious man (the complete opposite of Sebastian). Such characteristics simply aren't a hindrance to Sebastian acknowledging the characteristics that hold value to him. And because he respects Agni as a butler, he'll genuinely listen and take his advice on matters concerning butlerdom. Is Agni his friend? Probably not truly, but this is likely the closest he'll ever come to considering anyone that.
Lady Elizabeth: His master's fiancée, and therefore a person whom Sebastian must treat with respect and protect when necessary. And he does... but interestingly, Sebastian sometimes goes above and beyond what's strictly necessary in his interactions with her. Elizabeth will sometimes confide in Sebastian that she's worried nothing she says or does makes Ciel happy, and rather than just being distantly polite with her, Sebastian often goes out of his way to reassure her that her fiancé does appreciate and care for her. Make no mistake: Sebastian is also canonically shown to have no problem at all hurting Elizabeth; he doesn't care about her, but he does seem to have a genuine appreciation for honest, earnest, kind people, as long as they are also talented in some respect.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
So this will be less "how have their experiences shaped him" and more "here are examples of how these traits manifest", because Sebastian is, when it comes down to it, a largely static character. Such is the Eldritch Horror life.
• (2+) Negative Traits:
Sebastian's cruel. He's utterly devoid of empathy, a self-described sadist ("while I dislike being kicked, I do enjoy the feeling of kicking others") who delights in the chance to intimidate, hurt and kill on his master's orders… and most importantly, what one needs to remember is that this entire dress-up game as a butler is, indeed, a game, and his master better entertain, or else. In the Green Witch Arc, Ciel suffers a bad PTSD episode, and while Sebastian initially holds off due to being told that the best medicine for their master is rest and care, eventually he's frustrated enough with Ciel's lack of initiative (and the situation becomes too urgent), that he downright attempts to eat Ciel - after all, how dare his master stop being fun and stop his pursuit of revenge even temporarily.
Sebastian's passive-aggressive. What to do when your current mission in life is being The Perfect Butler™, which necessitates being polite and formal at all times, but you have a deep-seated need to be catty and judgemental? Covert snide remarks and subtle jabbing, of course! Sebastian never misses a chance to insult and taunt his master, and others who annoy him, all the while remaining surface-level proper. In the Jack the Ripper arc, he deliberately drags out the mission needlessly, because "I'm merely a chess piece; it's on you to make the right moves with me". Later on in the Circus arc, he puts Ciel in danger by following orders to the literal letter, because "it's your own fault if you give an unclear order" and "a game without thrills becomes boring".
• (2+)
Sebastian's devoted. He repeatedly says variations of "my body and soul, every strand of hair belongs to my master". The only two things Sebastian cares about: having a nice, unique-tasting meal, and his Aesthetics. Kuroshitsuji demons live with no laws, no obligations, no ties; only their arbitrarily chosen set of aesthetics to give their long, boring lives any meaning. As per his current contract, Sebastian's Aesthetics dictate he be the Exemplar Butler. They dictate he provide excellent service at all times, be undyingly loyal to his master, obey his every order without fail, fulfill his goals, literally break his own neck to protect him if need be… and Sebastian bloody well will succeed in all of that. If he doesn't? That would be breaking his word, betraying his Aesthetics, and that's unthinkable; therefore he will succeed (Sebastian's thinking generally consists of equal parts confidence, stubbornness, and plain circular logic). During the Murder mystery arc he repeatedly stabs himself on Ciel's orders, and on more than one occasion he's shot by Ciel's enemies (neither of which is is lethal to him, but it hurts). In the Campania arc, he literally very nearly gets himself killed protecting Ciel, getting a grim reaper's scythe straight through his torso. You see why I hesitate to label this a "positive" trait? It isn't. It's just a by-product of Sebastian's extremist values.
Sebastian's diligent. Not even being an amazing, powerful demon means you know everything about being a perfect Victorian butler right off the bat. Sebastian has to work to be as good as he (eventually) is. He has to practise. Ciel's sky-high demands don't make matters easier, as seen during the flashback scenes of their first few months of being contracted to one another - they both keep pushing and punishing one another until they both can perform their respective duties flawlessly. By the time we meet Sebastian, three years into Ciel's service, he's very conditioned to get everything Perfectly Right. A task requires him to work on it throughout the entire night to get it done on time? That's fine. He didn't get this new recipe 100% right on the first try? Time to re-do it fifty times in a row until he's mastered it completely, as seen in the Curry Arc. His current contract has rendered him an almost neurotic perfectionist who breaks out in hives being even five minutes behind schedule… which, on the one hand, results in excellent work, but on the other, very abused co-workers who have to take the brunt of the frustration a Perfect Butler doesn't inflict on his employer.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Hoo boy.
• Blood Type: Warmblood, because he does not need even more powers than he already has (hopefully I've understood that, correctly, this being a way you can interpret Warmblood? If not, Vileblood, please).
• Omen: A black vulture.
• Blessed Day: June 6th. Because 6/6, get it, get it? This would 100% be his IC choice.
• Patron Pthumerian:
• Blood Power Manifestation: Canon Powers > Blood Type, please (but as you can see, they overlap to a large extent anyway).
