Name: Sebastian Michaelis
Canon: Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler (manga)
Canon point: Chapter 52
Age: Old. Looks around 30.
History: Kuroshitsuji | Sebastian
Personality:
Negative traits: Just. just three? Uh, okay.
NARCISSISTIC. Sebastian is, if you ask him, leagues above everyone else. Why, with how incredibly skilled he is, his fantastical demon powers beyond the wildest dreams of humans, and centuries of accumulated knowledge, how could it possibly be any different? It' natural that people should be in awe of him. He's an absolute attention sponge who loves it when people Ohh and Ahh over how incredible he is… it is, after all, completely earned.
CRUEL. Sebastian's utterly devoid of empathy, a self-described sadist ("while I dislike being kicked, I do enjoy the feeling of kicking others") who delights in the chance to intimidate, hurt and kill on his master's orders… and most importantly, what one needs to remember is that this entire dress-up game as a butler is, indeed, a game, and his master better entertain, or else. Sebastian never goes too long without reminding Ciel of this. All the pain and misery that Ciel goes through? That'll only make his soul taste all the more delicious in the end.
PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE. What to do when your current mission in life is being The Perfect Butler™, which necessitates being polite and formal at all times, but you have a deep-seated need to be catty and judgemental? Covert snide remarks and subtle jabbing, of course! Sebastian never misses a chance to insult and taunt his master, and others who annoy him, all the while remaining surface-level proper. He's been known to drag out missions needlessly, and even put Ciel in danger by following orders to the literal letter, because "I'm merely a chess piece; it's on you to make the right moves with me" and "it's your own fault if you give an unclear order".
Positive Slightly less negative traits:
DEVOTED. The only two things Sebastian cares about: having a nice, unique-tasting meal, and his Aesthetics. Kuroshitsuji demons live with no laws, no obligations, no ties; only their arbitrarily chosen set of aesthetics to give their long, boring lives any meaning. As per his current contract, Sebastian's Aesthetics dictate he be the Exemplar Butler. They dictate he provide excellent service at all times, be undyingly loyal to his master, obey his every order without fail, fulfill his goals, literally break his own neck to protect him if need be… and Sebastian bloody well will succeed in all of that. If he doesn't? That would be breaking his word, betraying his Aesthetics, and that's unthinkable; therefore he will succeed (Sebastian's thinking generally consists of equal parts confidence, stubbornness, and plain circular logic). You see why I hesitate to label this a "positive" trait? It isn't. It's just a by-product of Sebastian's extremist values.
DILIGENT. Not even being an amazing, powerful demon means you know everything about being a perfect Victorian butler right off the bat. Sebastian has to work to be as good as he (eventually) is. He has to practise. Ciel's sky-high demands don't make matters easier. By the time we meet Sebastian, three years into Ciel's service, he's very conditioned to get everything Perfectly Right. A task requires him to work on it throughout the entire night to get it done on time? That's fine. He didn't get this new recipe 100% right on the first try? Time to re-do it fifty times in a row until he's mastered it completely. His current contract has rendered him an almost neurotic perfectionist who breaks out in hives being even five minutes behind schedule… which, on the one hand, results in excellent work, but on the other, very abused co-workers who have to take the brunt of the frustration a Perfect Butler doesn't inflict on his employer.
NOT… NECESSARILY EVIL. Look. Sebastian is cruel. He's sadistic, self-serving, manipulative… but as mean and petty as he can be, he never makes a move to, nor indicates he'd even want to, inflict pain or be cruel to anyone who has not somehow "earned" it. He genuinely seems to appreciate kind, honest, hard-working people (see: fellow butler Agni, Ciel's fiancée Elizabeth). He's been known to sometimes help random people - monetarily or with labour - partly because he just enjoys doing things well and likes to be praised for his hard work, partly because he simply has nothing better to do at the time. Again: this is not a kind trait. There are plenty of canonical examples of people begging Sebastian to save their lives, only for him to completely ignore them and leaving them to die gruesomely, since there’s nothing there for him to gain.
Powers/Abilities: Hoo boy. Note: In accepting my previous app, you asked me to put up a permission post for Sebastian putting other characters to sleep. If it's all right with you, I'm instead putting up a permission post for Sebastian manhandling/overpowering other characters, since that's far more likely to come up ICly. I honestly doubt the "putting to sleep" thing will ever be relevant in-game. Let me just find a code for that (any tips?).
Regret: "I ardently regret the last time I, hoping against hope, allowed the manor's chef to handle dinner preparations and the subsequent disaster." (No, this is not a serious regret. He has none.)
Inventory: A small knife, his pocket watch, and his head butler crest.
Sample:
Dear Player thread (contains some spoilers for recent chapters)
A game thread (CW: parasites crawling under skin. The "Common Law" ability is game-specific, not something Sebastian has in canon.)
A Bakerstreet thread Technically too old, but it's a good summary of how he acts.
