How would you describe your relationship with Johann? This is idle curiosity of course, the kid's not in trouble or anything.

With Mr Johann? [In a very sincere-sounding "I don't understand why I'm being asked this, but okay" tone:] Well... we have met but a few times, and admittedly our first meeting was less than ideal. Aside from that, I have quite enjoyed our interactions. He has been well-behaved, if that is your concern.

The two of you did have an aggressively long playdate a week or so ago.

Honestly, I just wanted to see how well the two of you got along. After all, it seems like he's actually made a friend.

I will admit, Mr Gray: I am not used to having friends. But despite that I would say we get along quite well.

[ There's a pause before Dorian continues, ] And I'm serious about this. Everybody here needs at least one person they can happily bitch to.

Goodness gracious. Is that how one defines friendship these days? [he says, as if he has any idea whatsoever what friendship is.

No, he isn't taking it literally, but still, pfft.]

That's how I define it. A friend is someone who you feel comfortable showing all your unpleasant little parts to. Who tolerates you enough to listen to your complaining.

Hm. I will say, that sounds a strange definition to me [that's because you literally have never had a friend, Sebastian], but I can see the merit to it.

How would you define 'friendship' then?

[ It's an honest question that Dorian's interested to hear an answer to, mostly because he's curious as hell. ]

I truthfully do not know exactly. Yours does not seem to take into account whether one likes the person in question, which is typically considered a requirement, no?

Typically, yes. But there are some people here on the ship that occasionally drive me up the wall and yet I'd call them friends.

I suppose if one is desperate to have someone tolerate their less palatable traits... Is that to say you like not those people at all, then?

A surprising amount of people tolerate my less palatable traits, [ Dorian shrugs. ] But I don't think that there's anyone I loathe that I would call a friend. Some people I'm more hot and cold with and they're still friends.

In that case, I will say yours is an interesting take on friendship. [And he does genuinely mean interesting; for once that's not an euphemism for something snide.] Thank you, Mr Gray; I appreciate the chance to expand my horizons.
